Ginninderry by Riverview
📍 Featured Project: Ginninderry, ACT
Client: Ginninderry
Location: West Belconnen, ACT
Overview
Ginninderry is one of the Capital Region’s most ambitious residential developments, located in West Belconnen. Planned to grow into a vibrant community of 30,000 residents across four suburbs over the next 30–40 years, Ginninderry is already gaining international recognition for innovation, sustainability, and liveability.
From the outset, Ginninderry’s vision has been to create a community of international significance—one that raises the standard in sustainability, design, construction, and innovation.
The construction industry generates more than 20 million tonnes of waste annually in Australia, much of it destined for landfill. Ginninderry’s leadership team recognised early that traditional site waste systems—skip bins, bulk removal, and direct landfill disposal—were not only unsustainable but also:
- Limited recycling opportunities
- Increased pollution from waste build-up and windborne debris
- Brought heavy truck and machinery movements through estates
- Heightened safety risks on construction sites
- Created unattractive, cluttered streetscapes
- Made it difficult for builders to track true waste costs
Our Role
Rowles Site Solutions (RSS) partnered with Ginninderry to implement a tailored waste management system that diverts more than 80% of site waste from landfill, with a target to reach 85%.
Instead of bulk skips, RSS introduced a flexible bagging system supported by regular site visits. At each visit, our team:
- Removed filled waste bags promptly
- Separated recyclable materials into dedicated streams
- Reduced contamination to maximise recycling rates
- Inspected sites for hazards and recorded findings for safety and compliance
This process began before construction and continued through to project completion, ensuring consistent standards across all stages of the build.
The Results
The partnership has delivered measurable benefits for Ginninderry, its builders, and residents:
- Sustainability outcomes: More than 80% of waste diverted from landfill, with a clear pathway to 85%
- Safer sites: Less clutter, fewer trip hazards, and reduced truck/machinery traffic
- Cleaner communities: Housing estates presented well to residents and potential buyers
- Builder benefits: Known costs for waste management, less workload for supervisors, and accurate waste benchmarking
- Resident value: Waste service included in land purchase at no additional cost to buyers or builders
Client Perspective
“For quite a long time I’ve had a desire to implement a strategy to overcome some of the issues around waste management, so I’m very pleased that RSS has come along and identified an opportunity where things can be managed better and more sustainably.”
— Steve Harding, Project Director, Ginninderry
“It means reduced traffic movement of large trucks and machinery within the estate, a cleaner and safer work site and development as a whole, the ability to accurately benchmark with other builders, a set and known cost for waste management, less workload for the supervisor, plus a construction site that presents well to potential customers.”
— David McIlveen, General Manager, Rowles Site Solutions
Looking Ahead
The Ginninderry partnership began as a pilot program, with the clear intention of establishing a long-term model that works for all stakeholders. Early success has demonstrated the value of smarter waste systems in large-scale, master-planned communities—setting a new benchmark for sustainable construction across Australia.

Construction sites generate a significant amount of waste, from scrap materials to packaging and everything in between. Properly disposing of this waste is crucial for reducing waste and improving sustainability for the construction industry.

Smart construction sites use innovative solutions to improve the efficiency, safety and sustainability of the construction site. A smart construction site uses the latest technology and processes to streamline costs, improve the organisation and safety of the site in a way that is sustainable from an economic and environmental perspective.

Construction sites are inherently dangerous places to work. From heavy machinery to sharp tools, there is a high potential for serious injuries to occur if safety is not a top priority. One important aspect of improving safety for trades on construction sites is to maintain a clean, hazard-free environment.
